A long-standing manufacturing client engaged us to conduct a search for a North America Sales Manager following the planned retirement of a longtime leader. The company initially wanted the successor to be based in Virginia, but after evaluating the role and the available talent pool, we recommended expanding the search to Detroit, where the new leader would be primarily working anyway. This opened the door to a stronger group of qualified sales leaders while still aligning with the day-to-day needs of the position.
The search also required flexibility on the client side. After identifying a candidate who stood out, it became clear that his compensation expectations were above the company’s original range. However, the hiring team recognized the value he could bring and ultimately increased the compensation package to secure the right person for the role.
The successful candidate also had a unique history with ASG. We had placed him in his first job out of college, later worked with him as he progressed throughout his career, and at one point he became an ASG client himself. Our long-standing relationship gave us a deeper understanding of his experience, capabilities, and potential than a typical candidate relationship might provide.
As the search progressed, working directly with the hiring manager proved to be an important turning point. Once we established a direct line of communication, we gained a clearer understanding of what the company needed, allowing the process to move forward smoothly. Ultimately, the candidate brought more than the ability to step into the role and perform it well. He had the experience, leadership, and strategic perspective to help move the company forward.
